Characteristics
Vinisol OH03 is a ter-polymer resin of vinyl
chloride, vinyl acetate, and hydroxy-proply acrylate
(HPA), produced using a solution polymerization
process. The resin is intended for use in a solvent or
mixture of solvents. The resin is treated using a
proprietary process to remove all low molecular
agents following polymerization, so a solution of the
resin is free of the insoluble particles (“seeds”) .
Vinisol OH03 is a cost effective alternative to OH
functional vinyl resins produced via a solution
polymerization process, and can be used in most
applications with little or no modification of the
solution formula. Vinisol OH03 resin has medium
molecular weight, fine particle size, and high bulk
density. Vinisol OH03 can be formulated with
components that will react with the available –OH on
the polymer, to form solvent resistant films and
coatings. Cross-linked films also display improved
toughness and tensile strength; typical improvements
in tensile strength are 10% to 20% compared to noncross-
linked films. The polymer reacts at room
temperature with urethane (isocyanate) prepolymers,
and reacts at elevated temperatures (baked cure) with
urea or melamine pre-polymers. The curing of baked
systems is accelerated by an acid catalysts such as
n-butyl phosphoric acid. The resin has excellent
solubility in conventional ketone/toluene and
ketone/xylene solvent mixtures, and improved
tolerance for alcohols due to it’s –OH functionality.
Vinisol OH03 produces films that are more resistant
to light and weathering than conventional vinyl
resins. Other physical properties (color, heat
stability, solution viscosity, etc.) are similar to
conventional vinyl solution resins.
